Finally, cooler temperatures swept across So Cal, much to the joy of all our 16 weary, dehydrated players. One of my colleagues showed up with his video equipment and did a little interview with me on the street in front of Monkey Paw. Later he shot some video of the tournament action which was pretty lively. Hopefully everything caught on camera will get trimmed down into a nice little 1-minute long feature that I can post for everyone to see. Thai ended up in the final round with 2014 C&B Cup IV winner, Alex D., who won again using the game board he used to threaten to burn as a sacrifice when he couldn't get past the first round!

We had a nice turnout of 20 players, unfortunately one could not stick around past 8 leaving us with 19 in the bracket. Thai ended up facing 3-time 2013 cup winner, Edith, in the final round. Thai prevailed which tied him up with Maria in the Summer Growler competition. That means that a sudden-death Growl-off must be held next month prior to the start of the C&B Cup X tournament. Can Thai break the tie, or will Maria say, "Si-Ya!" The only way this match will lack excitement is if we have a no-show who has to forfeit!

Monkey Paw was unusually crowded for a Tuesday, a large gathering of people filled the center tables for hours. These guys were definitely having a great time because they actually drowned out the jukebox which is a pretty amazing feat. We had four first-time players in the bracket which is always fun. Two people had to break out early leaving us with a total of 15 participants. All four first-timers survived Round I, two survived Round II, and one survived Round III. First-timer, Eric, ended up in the final round with Alex, but in the end Alex was having her best night ever and basically could not lose. Congratulations Alex!

It's a given that summer attracts lots of visitors to San Diego, even the Cock & Bull Cup seems to bring in players from out of town. First-time player, Barbara, came in from Northern California, but Chris & Heather hold the distance record, coming all the way from Washington DC! We had a balanced 16-player bracket with 3 late comers who sat out to watch and learn. Chris was knocked out in Round II, Heather survived but fell to Barbara who made it all the way to the final round. Like I always say, beginners luck is a definite advantage! The tournament started with 14 people leaving two random players with a bye in the first round. But just a few minutes in, three more people walked in ready to play. Thanks to the Cock & Bull custom bracket we can adjust on the fly and accommodate up to 32. Rocco was ready to sub for Leslie who needed to cut out early for a softball game, but she was taken out in the first round. In one of the craziest final rounds ever, Colin, who took the lead early was subjected to relentless heckling by mock sportscasters Matt and Jason, putting a whammy on his mojo and giving Michael P. his second cup for the year.

I guess we can blame climate change for the drought and hot Santa Anna wind storms in May. I think the wildfires that were sparked may have spooked a few people into staying home with a hose at the ready. Kudos to Monkey Paw for providing much needed AC and cold brew. This year we lost three players from the bracket by the time 8 o'clock rolled around. That knocked us down from 17 to 14 players in the tournament, not quite up to par with the 16 players we had last year. The reworked bracket left Jack with a bye in round II, but that did not slow down Alex, who bet on black all night and came up with his first tournament win. Hopefully this will end his temptation to burn his board as a sacrifice to the Monkey King.

We have a new attendance record for the March C&B Cup as well, three times as many players as last year! An uneven seventeen players showed up so the first and last player to walk into the pub randomly fell into the slots for an additional game. Long-time-player, Michael, never gave up on winning and the golden goblet of glory is now his for the first time. In an interesting twist, Jason and Jack tied in wins and losses for the season and were forced to play another game for the Winter Growler. Congratulations Jack!

We shattered our old attendance record for February with 20 players in the bracket! Maybe the springtime-like weather outside just got people out and about compared to the gloomy conditions we had last year. It was an exciting start to the 2014 Cock & Bull Winter Season at Monkey Paw. If two of the people who signed up to play did not have to leave early we would have had 19 players in the bracket. Instead we ended up with an uneven 17 giving one player a bye and two players an extra game. There were some very lively rounds that commanded the attention of everyone in the pub. But none could top the final round between Jack and Joe. People commented afterward that they were spent just from watching!
